February 13, 2017: A notice to proceed was issued for the construction of the Suicide Deterrent System and Wind Retrofit. December 16, 2016: The Board of Directors approved actions relative to a funding plan for the Suicide Deterrent System and Wind Retrofit, and authorized the award of a contract for construction. September 23, 2016: The Board of Directors authorized staff to seek a ninety-day extension of the bid validity period for all bids received in order to allow the development of a revised funding plan. December 9, 2015: A pre-bid conference was held in San Francisco for the Golden Gate Bridge Suicide Deterrent System and Wind Retrofit project. October 13, 2015: A Request for Proposals to construct the Golden Gate Bridge Suicide Deterrent System and Wind Retrofit was issued. Read the Press Release. June 27, 2014: The District Board of Directors approved a funding plan for the $76 million construction phase of the NET SYSTEM. Read the Staff Report. July 28, 2011: Contract was awarded to HNTB Corporation for the NET SYSTEM Final Design. The $5 million effort is being funded by MTC – see July 28, 2010 below. The consultant is now verifying existing conditions and developing preliminary designs. August 13, 2010: The Request for Proposals to engage consultants to design and prepare construction bid documents for the Suicide Deterrent Net System was issued. July 28, 2010: Metropolitan Transportation Commission allocates $5 million to do the Final Design work that is needed to move the project forward. Read the Press Release. February 12, 2010: Completed the environment and preliminary engineering certification of the Final Environmental document (FEIR) with the NET SYSTEM as the preferred alternative with a preliminary cost estimate of $66 million (updated estimate in 2014). Fall 2006: Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District (District), San Francisco, CA, initiated the Golden Gate Bridge Physical Suicide Deterrent System, Preliminary Engineering and Environmental Project. The total project cost is $211 million, which includes construction ($204 million), design and environmental expenses. Funding came from multiple sources. $74 million was provided by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, $70 million by California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), $60 million through Golden Gate Bridge District revenue, $7 million by State of California Mental Health Funds via State Budget (Prop 63), and $400 thousand from individual and foundation donations.
